How to protect your child’s skin in the sun

Summer’s here! That means sunny days, outdoor play and plenty of adventures with your little one. But as lovely as the sunshine is, a children’s delicate skin needs extra care to stay safe and protected.

Protecting your child’s skin is simpler than you might think. With a few easy habits, you can ensure your family stays comfortable and sun-safe all summer long.

Shade first. Sun second.

The easiest way to protect delicate skin is to stay in the shade. Babies under six months shouldn’t be in direct sunlight at all, and for toddlers, it’s best to avoid direct sun between 11am and 3pm when rays are strongest.

  • Choose a buggy or pram with a built-in sunshade or clip-on parasol.
  • A pop-up beach tent is perfect for parks, gardens or beach trips.
  • Find a lovely shady tree when you’re out and about.

But kids love to move. So let’s talk sunscreen next…

Choosing the right SPF for kids

Not all sunscreens are created equal, and children’s skin needs extra protection.

Choose:

  • SPF 50 for maximum protection.
  • Broad-spectrum protection (blocks both UVA and UVB rays).
  • Water-resistant formulas. Perfect for paddling pools.

How to apply sunscreen (without the drama)

I get it. Applying sunscreen to a squirming toddler can feel like an Olympic sport. But applying it properly is key to keeping them protected.

Apply protection generously to all exposed skin 15 to 30 minutes before heading outside so it has time to sink in. Use more than you think. Most people apply too little. Aim for a heaped teaspoon per limb.

Don’t forget those easy-to-miss spots: ears, backs of hands, the back of the neck and tops of feet. And reapply every two hours and after swimming or sweating, even if it says ‘waterproof’ on the label.

If your child hates the feel of sunscreen, try a spray, mousse or roll-on formula which tend to be quicker and easier.

At the end of a long day in the sun, a gentle after-sun lotion can help soothe warm skin.

Sun-savvy clothing

Clothing is another easy way to protect young skin. Just make sure it’s lightweight and breathable so they don’t overheat.

What to look for:

✅ Wide-brimmed hats that shade the face, ears and neck.
✅ Long-sleeved, loose clothing in light colours (darker fabrics absorb more heat).
✅ UV-protection sunglasses (if your toddler will keep them on!).

For extra protection, look out for UV-blocking clothing designed specifically for kids – these can be brilliant for beach days.

Make it a habit

It might feel like a lot to remember, but once it becomes part of your daily routine, sun protection is quick and easy. Plus, teaching your child about SPF from a young age sets them up with healthy skin habits for life.
